Client Business: The national German lottery system is overseen by federal states. LAND BRANDENBURG LOTTO GmbH is a subsidiary of the federal state of Brandenburg and, since November 1992, has been a member of the LOTTO- und TOTO association, a nationwide union of all LOTTO- and TOTO-companies of the 16 federal states of Germany. The approximately 110 employees in the central office are charged with providing reliable and constant network access needed for game operation.
InterMapper's Role: Provide network mapping, network performance monitoring, and diagram tools for, LAND BRANDENBURG LOTTO. Monitor network traffic in real time and report early warning of network performance problems and outages.
Lottery players in the German state of Brandenburg purchase their tickets through the approximately 780 Brandenburg-Lotto sale stores. Each one of those stores is connected to the internet via DSL and ISDN and by VPN-tunnel to the central office in Potsdam. A telephone company provides the stores with routers that are set to control the availability, operability and capacity for LOTTO BRANDENBURG. Technical operation of the sales stores and the overall network is managed by the central office.
In order to work, the lottery network must be available to everyone that wants to play. If a store goes down for a period of time, or if transactions are blocked by poor performance, the total pot is decreased and people are denied the chance to win.
LAND BRANDENBURG LOTTO contracted with System & Project GmbH, a consultancy specializing in management of large heterogeneous networks. System & Project implemented InterMapper network mapping and monitoring software to provide network maps and diagrams that allow central office staff to view the entire network. InterMapper provides network analysis and documentation for forward planning. Error and traffic load data is available all regional stores.
Using InterMapper network monitoring software, System & Project consultants created network maps of all appliances and connections within the 780 store network along with email notification. The LOTTO BRANDENBURG support team now has constant access to real-time network monitoring data views to monitor bandwidth and network traffic. They also use InterMapper diagram, analysis, and documentation tools to assure network performance stability through preventative maintenance and to plan for expansion effectively.
