"We have HP Openview running on a dual-processor Dell monitoring our seven building LANs. While it can do a lot, we find it difficult to configure and use. It's rather fussy. We use InterMapper running on an OS X Mac to monitor our WAN connections and for other network mapping chores. It's fast, has a very configurable display and it is very powerful. Most people in our building enjoy hearing the cheers and boos from InterMapper as a WAN node comes back up again or goes down as they walk by our operations door.

Right now our WAN is a coaxial Cable INET, and InterMapper allows us to keep the cable company on its toes. We email them outages logs, and now they don't bother questioning whether this was a "real" outage or not. InterMapper is a great program at a great price."

"Without InterMapper, I'm afraid that our long-line vendor would ride roughshod over us. With 60 frame relay lines, we're heavily dependent on reliable connections. We can tell immediately that a circuit has failed. When the frame relay vendor gets a call from us, they know there's a real problem and initiate the repair immediately. InterMapper is also a selling tool for me. When a customer asks why their network seems so slow, I can show them the link utilization right on the InterMapper map. They can see which lines are heavily loaded, and which need to be upgraded.

Most people don't need the full features of the expensive network management products. Furthermore, no one wants to learn a lot of SNMP just to monitor their network. InterMapper combines the best parts of those expensive packages with Macintosh ease of use. It has a visual display of your network, excellent layout capabilities, and beautiful logging. "I just identified errors on a Telco T-1 for a small school which does video conferencing via H.323. Their ISP had been working on the problem for 3 days now.

"Let me start by saying that I love this program, and your tech support has been wonderful. I was using InterMapper, and found a few problems with our routers. When I reported this to our parent company's North American WAN specialist, he claimed it was "that software" causing the problems.

Well I insisted he look into it, and guess what. Sprint found out the routers were being polled by our German parent companies HQ! After the sweet apology he asked how I could see all the sites and monitor CPU utilization, because "HP OpenView can tell bandwidth but I can not find a way to see CPU utilization.

That's when I said "Use IE and go to my IP address so you can see the chart with the problems." After a quick look, he asked if it would be OK to go to the head of IT North America and let him see how nice a tool this is. Of course I gave him my blessing. ;-)"
